Quail island is a native animal restoration island but its original use was the food gathering place for Maori prior to the arrival of the European settlers.  It has also been used as a quarantine zone for people suffering from leprosy and other diseases that they had been exposed to on the ships travelling to New Zealand.

Quail island is just out side of Lytelton harbour with just a 15 minute boat drive the harbour.

Quail island was also a good farming area but this also meant that the island became inhabited by introduced species and pests. It was also used for training for the dogs over in Antarctica. the island is also being restored to its natural state

Quail island consists of many introduced species of Flora & Fauna, Many native plants and trees have disappeared. The volunteers & D.O.C have made Quail is a nature reserve, planting native trees and plants which attract native animals and birds.

The D.O.C have made a nesting programme for the white flippered penguins. Some of our native birds are coming back to quail island such as the Kereru, the native wood pigeon. Quail island is nearly predator free except for mice and wild deer.
